Changes have been made to the PSLE English syllabus in 2025. But don’t worry, we’re here to break it all down for you and share some tips to help your child adapt!
What’s Changing?
The PSLE English exam will still have the same four parts, but the marks are distributed differently.
- More Focus on Speaking and Writing: The new syllabus focuses more on oral communication and writing because these skills are important for everyday life and their future.
- New Exam Format: The exam has been streamlined, but it will still cover everything your child needs to know.
Detailed Breakdown of Changes
The following table summarizes the key modifications in mark distribution and component formats:
| Paper | Component | Marks (2024) | Marks (2025) | Weightage (2025) | Notable Changes |

| 4 | Oral Communication | 30 | 40 | 20% | – Reading Aloud: Marks increased from 10 to 15; inclusion of a preamble stating purpose, audience, and context.- Stimulus-Based Conversation: Marks increased from 20 to 25; use of real-life photographs as stimuli. |
Embrace and Conquer PSLE 2025
- Writing (Paper 1): Students will need to adapt to the slight reduction in marks and the new requirement in Situational Writing is to generate an idea independently. Continuous Writing will also see a reduction in marks, emphasizing concise and effective writing.
- Language Use and Comprehension (Paper 2): The changes in Visual Text Comprehension and Editing necessitate a focus on comparative analysis and precise language use.
- Oral Communication (Paper 4): The increased marks and new formats in Reading Aloud and Stimulus-Based Conversation highlight the importance of oral proficiency and higher order thinking skills. Reading aloud now requires students to show awareness of the purpose, audience and context of the passage. For the stimulus-based conversation, students will need to apply real-life contexts and make inferences to the photo provided.
