- G1 (General 1): Equivalent to the former Normal (Technical) stream.
Unlike the rigid streaming system of the past, SBB enables students to mix and match their subjects at different levels based on their strengths and progress over time.
How Does Subject-Based Banding Work?
Upon entering secondary school, students are placed into one of three posting groups based on their PSLE scores. This posting group determines the initial level for most of their subjects. However, students have the flexibility to take certain subjects at a higher level if they meet the required PSLE score threshold.
For example:
- A student placed in Posting Group 2 will start with most subjects at G2.
- If they performed well in subjects like English, Math, Science, or Mother Tongue during PSLE, they may take those subjects at G3.
- Students who excel during secondary school can later progress from G2 to G3 in more subjects.
This means a student who initially starts with mostly G2 subjects could, over time, take many or even all subjects at G3, based on their performance.
